Tight U.S. election could be decided by Americans in Canada: ex-U.S. envoy – National

The razor-thin U.S. presidential race between U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump could be decided by American voters living abroad in countries like Canada, a former envoy says. Bruce Heyman, a Democrat who served as U.S. ambassador to Canada under the Obama administration, says a large number of voters from vital swing states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin that could decide the Nov. 5 election live just across the border in Canada. The latest FiveThirtyEight polling averages in those states and others show Harris and Trump are separated by a fraction of a percentage point, making every vote consequential.“I’m just appealing, please, Americans in Canada, please, if you have been registered to vote (and have received an absentee ballot), you need t...

We need to settle this debate: Is it OK to call records ‘vinyls’? – National

I try not to be judgmental, but I have a thing for correct nomenclature and proper pronunciations. I’ll let slide anyone who pronounces the “L” in “calm,” and I’ll give a little bit of slack to anyone who initially struggles with “quinoa.” But if you insist that “Uber” (as in “You’ve had too much to drink. Let me call you an Uber”) is pronounced “Yuber,” that’s when the red mist descends. I also get a little crazy when someone pronounces David Bowie’s last name like it’s the front of a boat. Despite being spelled “Gahan,” the name of the lead singer of Depeche Mode wants you to know that it’s “Dave GAHN.” And the guy out front of Queens of the Stone Age? Contrary to anything you’ve heard, it’s Josh HOMmy. (Trust me. I’ve talked to the man.)I get even more exorcised when someone insists on ...

Conspiracy theories and threats: The new reality in US elections

By Paula Ramon, AFP Donald Trump and Kamala Harris go head-to-head in the US election on 5 November. Photo: For two decades, her neighbours have trusted Cindy Elgan to run elections in her small corner of Nevada. Now those same neighbours think she is part of a conspiracy to rob Donald Trump of the presidency. Never mind that in 2020 the Republican got 82 percent of the votes cast in Esmeralda County - whose 700 or so people make it one of the least populated in the United States. "I do not trust the results from the 2020 election," said Mary Jane Zakas, a retired schoolteacher who backs an effort to recall Elgan as county clerk. The problem, said Zakas, echoing a theory often repeated among conservatives, is the use of voting machines instead of paper ballots. "As Mike Lindell has ...

The clocks are changing: how to reset your circadian rhythm when we gain an extra hour’s sleep

This weekend the clocks will roll back, signalling the end of daylight saving time and the start of long, dark winters. Of course, there is the short-term perk: the fact it allows us an extra hour in bed before our alarms sound — but experts warn that it’s not great news for your body, both in so far as it affects your internal clock and for the fact we have to adjust to those aforementioned pitch-black mornings.Yes, it’s only 60 minutes, but as Maz Packham, a nutritionist and consultant for W-Wellness explains: “The clocks changing can impact our circadian rhythm, the body’s natural internal clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle.” Its function is far-reaching and it is linked to “key functions such as sleep, mood and metabolism,” she adds.PexelsThe reason the autumn time change (on 27...

The ‘F’ word is in play as Trump’s former generals turn on him and election nears | US News

Is Donald Trump a fascist? The 'F' word is in play in the final few days of this US election campaign.Trump's opponent Kamala Harris was asked whether she thought Donald Trump is a fascist during a CNN townhall in Pennsylvania this week and replied "Yes. I do. Yes. I do." She has shifted her campaign from smilingly spreading "joy", to concentrating on bread-and-butter issues and warnings about a Trump victory.People "care about bringing down the cost of groceries", she explained. "They also care about our democracy and not having a president of the United States who admires dictators and is a fascist."The spectre of fascism is in the news because of alarming threats from Trump himself, along with on the record responses to them by two top generals who served in the White House during Trump...

Georgia’s ruling party wins election over pro-EU opposition | World News

Georgia's ruling party has won the country's general election, beating its pro-EU and pro-Western opposition. The Central Election Commission (CEC) said the ruling Georgian Dream party, which has been in power for 12 years, had won 54% of the vote with more than 99% of precincts counted. Both Georgian Dream and the opposition blocs trying to end its time in power portrayed the vote as an existential choice between moving towards the West - potentially by joining the European Union - or tightening ties with its regionally-dominant neighbour, Russia.Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of Georgian Dream and a billionaire who made his fortune in Russia, has accused opposition parties of being "an agent of a foreign country that will only fulfil the tasks of a foreign country" - suggesting the West...

Deep turmoil at Washington Post, as Bezos still silent on non-endorsement

By Hadas Gold, CNN US media frequently announce formal endorsements of political candidates: The Washington Post's decision not to endorse a US presidential candidate, less than 2 weeks before the US election, has been divisive. Photo: Ajay Suresh/ Creative Common BY 2.0 One day after The Washington Post announced it would not endorse a presidential candidate in this year's election or in the future, its billionaire owner remains silent as the newspaper's staff are in turmoil. Jeff Bezos has so far declined to comment on the situation, even as his own paper's journalists reported that it was Bezos who ultimately spiked the planned endorsement. A source with knowledge told CNN on Friday that an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris had been drafted, before it was squashed. In th...
