What did Hollywood get wrong about great white sharks in Jaws?

The movie Jaws is based on the 1974 novel. Photo: Wikimedia Commons By Petria Ladgrove and Belinda Smith, ABC Dahhh dum. Dahhh dum. The ominous theme music in the 1975 movie Jaws invoked terror in cinemas, and nearly half a century later, those two notes still signify the presence of a lurking menace. The Steven Spielberg thriller, based on the 1974 novel of the same name, told the story of the hunt for a gigantic, bloodthirsty, rogue shark that attacked numerous swimmers at a fictional beach resort in the US over a summer. To portray the aquatic antagonist, Spielberg used real shots of South Australian sharks alongside three specially built animatronic sharks dubbed "Bruce", reportedly named after Spielberg's lawyer. Each mechanical shark sported rows of fearsome pointed teeth in its m...

Trudeau touts embattled carbon levy to global audience, says it faces misinformation – National

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is defending his embattled carbon-pricing program on the world stage, and he argues that misinformation is threatening environmental progress. Trudeau arrived today in Brazil for the G20 leaders summit, and addressed a conference held by the anti-poverty group Global Citizen. He touted Canada’s consumer carbon levy, arguing it is among the world’s strongest but “an easy political target” in Canada.Trudeau acknowledged pushback to the policy, but he said it is being fuelled by what he called propaganda and misinformation that affordability is in contrast with fighting climate change. He said his Liberal party has already won three elections on carbon pricing as an issue, and he said the policy is “very much in question” for the next election. ...

It’s a stunning shift in US policy – but Biden’s announcement will trigger fury and fresh threats from Moscow | UK News

President Vladimir Putin has warned the West they would be playing with fire if they allowed Ukrainian forces to launch Western-supplied cruise and ballistic missiles at Russia, saying it could even trigger a global conflict.British and US officials, though, have repeatedly advised their respective capitals not to be intimidated by Moscow's sabre rattling.Ukraine war latest: Biden lifts ban on R...

A thought experiment: Why is Taylor Swift as big as she is?

With three of six Taylor Swift shows in Toronto complete, the city — which really should be named “Tayronto” because it has given over everything to her — gets a chance to catch its breath and enjoy slightly less traffic and congestion until everything ramps up again for the next round of stadium shows on Thursday. Southern Ontario — nay, Canada — hasn’t seen this kind of frenzy over a pop star in…well, maybe ever. You’ve no doubt heard about the unbelievable amounts people have been willing to pay for tickets on the secondary market. One man emailed me marvelling that his daughter was planning to buy a ticket behind the stage for $5,000. I heard of a woman who was offered $38,000 for her tickets but refused to give them up. BlogTO has been monitoring the situation and found a seat going fo...
