Why Dry January can mask a serious alcohol addiction, says alcoholic Dr Arabella Byrne

When I was drinking, I knew these benefits: better sleep, better skin, weight loss, improved concentration, brighter mood. In the depths of my addiction, a hard-won period of abstinence would reveal these benefits to me in what felt like a rebuke. The way, for example, I could use a keyboard without my hands shaking or the ability to answer the phone without having to lie about where I was. Each of these revelations held a thorny conundrum at their core; are you an alcoholic if you can stop, even for a day? It is my experience that alcoholics can stop drinking for certain periods of time, but they are not able to stay stopped for good. I certainly couldn’t manage more than a few days at a time, but I could, through gritted teeth, stop. See? I’m fine. Source link

Pitt-Jolie divorce settled, but other legal issues remain for Brangelina – National

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, ending one of the longest and most contentious divorces in Hollywood history but not every legal issue between the two. Jolie and Pitt signed off on a default declaration filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, saying they have entered into a written agreement on their marital and property rights. The settlement was first reported by People magazine.“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, said in a statement. “She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Ange...

Is it really safe to put glitter makeup products near your eyes?

Unfortunately, if you have sensitive eyes or wear contact lenses, Dr Denton Dombrowski says glitter products are an absolute no-no. Also, you should never grab the nearest pot of glitter and go to town — if it’s not cosmetic grade, you’re taking an even bigger risk. “There are major differences between craft glitter and cosmetic glitter,” she explains. “Craft glitter is often made of metal or glass! So one can imagine, if that were to inadvertently end up in the eye, you're putting yourself at risk for irritation, pain and possible infection as well.” Source link

Chinese hackers involved in ‘major cybersecurity incident’: U.S. Treasury – National

Chinese hackers remotely accessed several U.S. Treasury Department workstations and unclassified documents after compromising a third-party software service provider, the agency said Monday. The department did not provide details on how many workstations had been accessed or what sort of documents the hackers may have obtained, but it said in a letter to lawmakers revealing the breach that “at this time there is no evidence indicating the threat actor has continued access to Treasury information.” The hack was being investigated as a “major cybersecurity incident,” it added.“Treasury takes very seriously all threats against our systems, and the data it holds,” a department spokesperson said in a separate statement. “Over the last four years, Treasury has significantly bolstered its cyber d...

Travel insiders’ favourite hotels of 2024: the best stays from Bali to Georgia

Once a publishing house, the brutalist building on Merab Kostava, now known as Stamba has fast become one of my favourite hotels, not only in Georgia but in the entire world. Centering around a leafy courtyard complete with a defunct electrical pylon, the 64 bedrooms are expansive and well-designed, with gorgeous antique parquet flooring, high ceilings, and unique works of art by local Georgian artists. But the hotel also plays host to a quirky café complete with mint green and pale pink decor, elaborate chandeliers and vases of fresh daisies on every table. Plus, there’s a chocolaterie, funky outdoor amphitheater and a set of amazing micro ‘space farms’ where the hotel grows its very own leafy greens, edible flowers, and miniature vegetables on site, too. stambahotel.com Source link...

Regular eye check-ups key to prevent vision loss from glaucoma in your 40s

Adults in their 40s must undergo regular eye check-ups to prevent vision loss from glaucoma -- a chronic eye disease that can lead to vision loss and blindness, said an ophthalmologist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Taking to social media platform X, Dr. Tanuj Dada, Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Glaucoma Services at RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, said that early detection of glaucoma, which often presents no symptoms, is crucial. If left undetected it can lead to vision loss and blindness. “Glaucoma `silent thief of sight` can cause irreversible vision loss if left undetected. If you have no symptoms and are above 40 years of age, it is recommended that you get an eye check-up every two years,” Dada said. He explained that glaucoma or kala mo...
