Study: Integrating palliative care can expand access to healthcare

Integrating palliative care into the public health system can help universalise access and improve healthcare, according to a study.  Palliative care is a branch of medicine that aims to prevent and relieve the physical, social, and spiritual suffering of patients suffering from chronic life-limiting illnesses and their caregivers. The World Health Organisation defines palliative care as ‘an approach that improves the quality of life of patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness’. The study showed that nearly 7-10 million people require palliative care in India, but less than 4 per cent have access to it. "With rising burden of chronic diseases in the country and associated suffering, there is an urgent need to imp...

Oil tanker ban just one obstacle to northern B.C. pipeline as MOU expected Thursday

A new oilsands pipeline to the northern B.C. coast is a non-starter as long as oil tankers are forbidden there, but experts say a removal of the federal ban would only lift one of many obstacles deterring the private sector from such a project. Media reports say the federal and Alberta governments are poised to announce a memorandum of understanding Thursday, affirming support for a pipeline alongside emissions-reducing measures. The agreement reportedly includes exemptions to the tanker ban, which has been law since 2019.Warren Mabee, director of the Queen’s University Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy, said the possible MOU would be a “policy document” of sorts that’s subject to change and non-binding, but nonetheless significant.“The fact that … the prime minister is throwing...

For Vedant Sinha, returning to The Family Man 3 is more than just stepping into a character it’s going back to the place that shaped him as an actor. New Georgia prosecutor halts election interference case against Trump, allies – National

The prosecutor who recently took over the Georgia election interference case against President Donald Trump and others said in a court filing Wednesday that he has decided not to pursue the case further. Pete Skandalakis, the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, took over the case last month from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who was removed over an “appearance of impropriety” created by a romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she chose to lead the case. After Skandalakis’ filing, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee issued a one-paragraph order dismissing the case in its entirety. It was unlikely that legal action against Trump could have moved forward while he is president. But 14 other defendants still faced charges, in...

New study identifies five major phases of brain rewiring

The human brain goes through five major eras of structural changes over a lifetime -- marked by turning points at ages nine, 32, 66 and 83 -- as it rewires to support varied ways of thinking as one grows, matures and ultimately declines, a study has suggested. Age nine is when communications between brain networks developed since birth transition to the adolescent phase, which then lasts up to age 32, researchers led by those from the UK`s University of Cambridge explain. Early thirties is when the brain`s neural wiring shifts into "adult mode" -- the longest era lasting over three decades and marked by a stabilising of the brain`s architecture. Age 32 is also the "strongest topological turning point" of the entire lifetime, they said. Age 66 was found to signal the start of an "early a...

Canadians want ‘energy security,’ Champagne says amidst pipeline talk

Canadians understand that energy security, economic security and national security are linked, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Wednesday when asked about Ottawa’s proposed energy agreement with Alberta. “Canada can be an energy superpower, both in conventional and clean energy. But I would let the major project office do its work. That’s why they’re there. There’s well-established process,” Champagne said, referring to the new federal entity overseeing major infrastructure projects.“I think that Canadians understand better now than ever the nexus between energy security, economic security, national security. I think we can do that as a nation in consultation, respecting jurisdiction, and at the same time looking at what’s in the best interest of Canada,” he said. When aske...
