Why Mumbai doctors believe scoliosis deserves timely intervention

Scoliosis causes abnormal curvature of the spine, and is increasingly affecting children between the ages of 10-15. Early diagnosis is crucial as untreated scoliosis can lead to long-term complications, including chronic pain and breathing difficulties. Recognising early signs such as uneven shoulders, an abnormal posture, or one hip appearing higher than the other can help in seeking timely treatment and preventing further progression. Dr Sameer Ruparel, spine surgeon, Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, said, ‘‘Scoliosis is a spine condition commonly seen in children. The spine of the child with scoliosis will bend laterally or sideways to form a C or S-shaped curvature (middle part) and lumbosacral (lower part) spine. In 3-4 months, 2-3 children aged 10-15 come with abnormal spine curvature. ...

Ruby Dhalla wants ‘personal translator’ in French Liberal leadership debate – National

For the second time, Liberal leadership candidate Ruby Dhalla has asked the party to provide a “personal translator” for the upcoming federal French language debate, a week after her first request was denied. The request also comes as she is calling a recent media report “fake news” over questions about whether there has been Indian foreign interference in her campaign. In an interview with Global News, Dhalla said she made a new request a week ago for a “personal translator” but has yet to hear back from the party.Caucus members say it is “essential” for anyone who wants to lead the party – and become prime minister – to be able to speak directly with Canadians in both official languages.“I do not believe that having a language barrier, if you want to call it that, should prevent me from c...

Chantal Kreviazuk changes Canadian anthem lyric to protest Trump remarks – National

The anthem singer who performed the Canadian anthem prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game Thursday night changed a lyric in “O Canada” as a response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated remarks about making the country the 51st state. Publicist Adam Gonshor in an email to The Associated Press confirmed Chantal Kreviazuk changed the lyric from “in all of us command” to “that only us command” and confirmed Trump’s 51st state comments were the reason why. During Canada’s 3-2 overtime victory, Kreviazuk told the AP she did it “because I believe in democracy, and a sovereign nation should not have to be defending itself against tyranny and fascism.”“I’m somebody who grew up on music that spoke to the heart and the moment, and it shaped me as a songwriter and really as a human b...

Could Canada legally challenge Trump’s tariffs? What to know – National

If U.S. President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian goods as he’s repeatedly threated to do, experts say Canada has a strong case to challenge it under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico free trade agreement. The question, though, is how quickly any decision may come through the process — and more importantly, whether the U.S. would respect any decisions from the outcome.“A rules-based system is only as good as the willingness of the government who’s subject to it, to comply with it,” said Wendy Wagner, a partner at Gowling WLG.The free trade agreement is a nation-to-nation agreement, so there’s no one else to appeal to if a country decides not to respect a decision.America’s past performance on adhering to trade decisions has been mixed. Areas of contention include complicated measures such as...

Ali Fazal pushes up shooting of Prosit Roy`s series as Rakt Bramhand hits pause

Last week, news emerged that Ali Fazal and director Prosit Roy are set to team up for an action thriller series for Prime Video. Now, mid-day has learnt that the series will go on floors as early as April. Reason? Fazal’s date diary has opened up after the shoot of his other project, Raj-DK’s Rakt Bramhand, has been put on hold. So, the actor and Roy will hit the accelerator on their modern-day crime story, kicking off the shoot in Delhi in April. Sources say the yet-untitled series is being developed as a large-scale action spectacle. A source close to the production reveals, “Ali was to start this show a little later in the year. But with the break in Rakt Bramhand’s shoot, owing to the reimagining of some sequences and some reported financial mismanagement, this series is starting earl...

Expert explains how genetic testing can help make informed health choices

Genetic factors sometimes play in role in the development of prevalent non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cancer. In some cases, these health risks can be identified early through genetic testing, a process that examines one’s DNA to detect changes that can increase risk of diseases. It can often prove useful in diagnosing genetic conditions and assessing risk of future diseases. Dr Pranav Gupta, Consultant and Head, Molecular Biology Regional Reference Lab at Apollo Diagnostic Delhi, explains, “Genetic testing is an effective tool that provides valuable insight into one’s health by analysing DNA and confirming whether one has a birth defect, chromosomal disorder or hereditary cancer.” Further sharing how DNA can help diagnose health risks, he says, “DNA acts as a blueprint of y...

The real fur and crocodile skin combeack: How luxury fell for the real thing again

How did we get here? After all, a few years ago, fur was all but dead. Kering, the luxury conglomerate that owns Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga, among many others, banned the use of fur by its brands in 2021. Net-a-Porter, Vinted and By Rotation have no fur policies. Even traditional furriers, like Fendi, have increasingly moved away from using fur in recent years, diversifying to focus instead on categories like leather goods. A cursory search on its website today only brings up a handful of fur-trimmed pieces. Source link

Ukraine ‘must’ be part of peace talks, Trudeau says in call with Zelenskyy – National

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s position that Ukraine “must” be included in negotiations to end Russia’s full-scale invasion during a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday, the Prime Minister’s Office said. The call was held days after the U.S. held a first round of bilateral talks with Russian officials about ending the war, and as U.S. President Donald Trump increasingly attacks Zelenskyy — rhetoric the White House has refused to walk back.“Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated that Canada will always stand in defence of Ukraine and emphasized that there can be no sustainable peace in Europe without security for Ukraine,” a readout of the call provided by the PMO said.“The leaders stressed that any peaceful end to the conflict must include Ukraine at...

U.S. says all NATO members should meet 2% defence spending target by June – National

The White House said Thursday that it expects all NATO members to be spending at least two per cent of their GDP on defence by the alliance’s next summit — four months from now. The demand further ramps up pressure on allies like Canada — which has long missed the spending target and doesn’t plan to meet it for another seven years — from U.S. President Donald Trump, who is pushing for drastic defence spending increases and reducing reliance on U.S. security.“The fact that we are going to enter into a NATO summit this June with a third of our NATO allies not meeting the two per cent minimum — a commitment they made a decade ago … that’s unacceptable,” Trump’s national security advisor Mike Waltz said at a press conference at the White House.“President Trump’s made that clear. The minimum ne...
