Want to beat heart disease, cancer? New research claims eating 5 mushrooms helps

Low in calories and packed with essential vitamins and minerals, mushrooms make for an excellent addition to your diet and according to new research, eating just five small mushrooms a day could help combat a range of diseases, including heart disease, cancer and dementia.  This is due to two key antioxidants — ergothioneine and glutathione. These substances play a significant role in neutralising damaging `free radicals`, which are implicated in a variety of severe diseases, according to researchers. “What we found is that, without a doubt, mushrooms are highest dietary source of these two antioxidants taken together, and that some types are really packed with both of them,” said Robert Beelman, director at the Penn State Centre for Plant and Mushroom Products for Health in the US. Goldman says these lagging stocks will turn around in 2025

Several stocks that have underperformed in 2024 may be poised for substantial gains in coming months, according to Goldman Sachs. The last trading month of 2024 has been off to a solid start, adding to the year-to-date gains across all three major stock market averages. On Wednesday, the S & P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite reached new closing records and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 45,000 for the first time. Yet some stocks that have lagged this year could outperform in the first quarter of 2025, the investment bank said. Since Goldman began tracking data surrounding the "laggards" trade in 2002, the trend has been proven correct in 13 years. "Looking towards laggards of 2024, the YTD index-relative performance of this group (-39%) is similar to 2023 but worse than the...

Melbourne synagogue fire condemned by Australian PM as ‘act of hate’

Photo: RNZ / Angus Dreaver Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has denounced a suspicious blaze that tore through a Melbourne synagogue as a violent act of antisemitism aimed at creating fear in the community. Fire crews were called to the Adass Israel synagogue at Ripponlea in Melbourne's south-east shortly after 4am and found a large fire burning through the building. Early-morning worshippers inside the synagogue reported seeing two masked men throw fuel inside the premises, before setting it alight. "There was some banging on a door with some liquid thrown inside and was lit alight, the few people inside the synagogue ran outside the back door, one of them got burnt," Adass Israel Synagogue board member Benjamin Klein said. "The whole place took alight pretty quickly." He beli...

David Beckham: will he finally get a knighthood?

What to give the man who seems to have everything for Christmas? Well, there is one thing which has thus far evaded David Beckham, despite being on his list year after year. It is of course, a spot on the New Year’s Honours list — or, more specifically, a knighthood. By now, it has become something of a national running joke that the 49-year-old former England captain has had a years-long campaign for his place amongst the knights of the realm. Brand Beckham has long been a hyper-public supporter of the monarchy, turning up to a host of royal events and famously queuing for 13 hours to pay his respects after the Queen’s death in 2022. And then, in 2013, a series of expletive-filled emails from Beckham were leaked, which slammed the Honours Committee which rejected him, as a bunch of "unapp...

UnitedHealthcare CEO’s killing shows why companies spend millions to protect top executives

By Chris Isidore, CNN UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in what police described as a bold and deliberate attack in the heart of New York City. Photo: CNN Newsource UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson had an in-house security detail assigned to him during his trip to New York City, according to a source familiar with the company's security, but the detail was not with him when he was shot and killed in front of a hotel early Wednesday morning. It is common for top executives of major corporations to have personal security provided by their companies. Those measures are often significant expenses listed in corporate filings, though UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare's corporate parent, does break out the cost in its own filings. The need to protect the safety o...

Fewer low-altitude clouds may explain ‘missing’ 0.2C of warming from Earth’s hottest year: study

By Peter de Kruijff, ABC environment reporter All clouds have some level of cooling effect on the planet. Photo: Bruce Rolff A drop in the number of low-altitude clouds was behind unexplained warming that contributed to the world's hottest year on record, a new study suggests. The record-breaking heat of 2023, which saw the planet warm an average 1.45 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial surface temperatures, took many climate scientists by surprise. Their closest predictions, which simulated the effects of human-created warming and other known drivers, were around 0.2C lower than observed temperatures. Experts could not fully explain the extra heat source at the time. Now research published in Science today suggests the missing warming mechanism from the prediction models was a low i...
