Photo: MARIA ALEJANDRA CARDONA/AFP By Kara Scannell, CNN Sean 'Diddy' Combs will remain in jail after a judge rejected his latest attempt for release while the rapper and music producer awaits trial on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. Judge Arun Subramanian denied Combs' team's motion for release on Wednesday. His decision followed a two-hour court hearing on Friday where he appeared to explore potential options and questioned prosecutors' allegation that Combs continued to obstruct the ongoing investigation. "The Court finds that the government has shown by clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of the community," the judge wrote in a five-page order. CNN has reached out to representatives for...

How to avoid the four viruses known as the quaddemic

I’ve just recovered from a virus. A trifling one in the grand scheme of things, but I was nonetheless in bed for two solid days feeling sorry for myself. Between fever dreams, I scrolled on my phone for health advice. An insane thing to do while not quite sound of mind you may think – and you’d be right, because it was during one such session that I stumbled across the news of what’s being dubbed a quad-demic, aka what sounds like a hellish constellation: Covid-19, flu, norovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (in layman’s terms: pretty much a cold). After that, I found myself down the rabbit’s hole. Apparently on the rise, Boots have launched a private RSV vaccination service to help reduce the likelihood of those most at risk, including the elderly and babies, from getting it. But what...

Donald Trump says he’ll protect US-made cars through steep tariffs, but there is no such thing as an all-American car

Photo: TANNEN MAURY / AFP By Chris Isidore, CNN President-elect Donald Trump is vowing to protect American-made cars through steep tariffs on imports. The problem is, there is no such thing as an all-American car. Trump has promised that tariffs, which are a tax on goods that are imported from another country, will be a key part of his economic plan in his second term. On Monday he announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all goods coming from Mexico or Canada on his first day in office. The US government tracks what percentage of each car's parts is made "domestically." But under current trade law, both Canadian-made parts and US-made part...

Is there a link between depression and menstrual pain? Study finds out

Women suffering from depression are more likely to experience menstrual pain (also known as dysmenorrhea), finds a study on Wednesday. Previous research has shown women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression and often experience more severe physical symptoms. While the links between mental health and reproductive health have been found, the associations have remained underexplored. To decode this, researchers from China and the UK led a study where they analysed genetic variation and identified specific genes that may be responsible for the effect of depression on menstrual pain. "Our findings provide preliminary evidence that depression may be a cause, rather than a consequence, of dysmenorrhea," said lead author Shuhe Liu, a doctoral student at Xi`an Jiaotong-Liverpool-U...

Camp Century: Abandoned Cold War ‘city under the ice’ rediscovered by NASA | Science, Climate & Tech News

NASA scientists have rediscovered a long-lost "city" buried under 100ft of ice, 58 years after it was abandoned as a US base during the Cold War.Camp Century, built in 1959 in northwest Greenland, was a never-completed secret launch site for ballistic missiles to reach the Soviet Union. As ice began to crush the site, the US abandoned the project and left the camp - which could have expanded to 33 bases - to be slowly lost to the elements. That's until NASA scientist Chad Greene, helped by agency expert Alex Gardner, flew over Greenland in April this year to map ice sheets and estimate future sea level rise."We were looking for the bed of the ice and out pops Camp Century," said Mr Gardner, describing how their radar-detecting structures appeared to align with tunnels built in the base. "We...

Malishka says she was Sarojini Naidu in her past life | Freedom At Midnight

RJ-turned-actor Malishka Mendonsa, who essays the role of Indian political activist and poet Sarojini Naidu in the web series ‘Freedom at Midnight’, speaks exclusively to mid-day.com about embarking on a journey of prosthetics, and a mammoth amount of history lessons to ace the character of The Nightingale of India in the Nikkhil Advani directorial.  Malishka Mendonsa played Sarojini Naidu as a child Malishka recalls that when she was offered this role, she went back to her notes and reminisced about playing Sarojini Naidu as a child. “I dressed up as her for a freedom fighter meet. That particular kind of hair, that bindi, the saree. I loved her anyway. I probably read a few of her poems. First of all, we haven`t seen her being represented at all in any of the historicals that we`ve see...

By Lauren Day, ABC The Nana backpackers hostel in Vang Vieng, Laos. Photo: ABC / Mitchell Woolnough In the days after backpackers in Laos began falling violently ill due to suspected methanol poisoning, travellers tried desperately to warn each other about the hostel at the centre of the scandal. In a series of now deleted Google Reviews obtained by the ABC, backpackers warned about the unfolding disaster at the Nana Backpacker Hostel in Vang Vieng - where at least five of the six people to have died from suspected methanol poisoning were staying. Eight members of hostel staff had now been detained. The reviews were sometimes met with claims of 'slander' and subsequently deleted. In an interview with the ABC last week, owner Duong van Huan denied the poisoned drinks came from his bar...
