NDP will support ‘whatever works’ to blunt tariff effect, says Singh – National

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Thursday called on the minority Liberals to recall Parliament and pass legislative relief measures for workers set to be hit by U.S. tariffs expected this weekend. “If you’re serious about supporting workers, I’m demanding that the Liberal government call back Parliament. Let’s put before Parliament a package to protect workers. Support workers that are impacted by these tariffs, and support communities,” Singh told reporters.Singh reiterated that the party would hold firm on its position to vote to bring down the Liberal government in March, but signaled that they would be open to working with them until then.“We are going to be voting down the government in March, but there’s still two months. The Liberals think they can wait two months before they bring in le...

Study shows fatty muscles raise heart disease risk regardless of BMI

People with pockets of fat hidden inside their muscles are at a higher risk of dying or being hospitalised from a heart attack or heart failure, regardless of their body mass index, according to research on Monday.  The new study, published in the European Heart Journal, adds evidence that existing measures, such as body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference, are not adequate to evaluate the risk of heart disease accurately for all people. The study showed that people with higher amounts of fat stored in their muscles were more likely to have damage to the tiny blood vessels that serve the heart (coronary microvascular dysfunction or CMD). They were also more likely to die or be hospitalised for heart disease. People who had high levels of intermuscular fat and evidence of CMD were at...

Fredericton MP Jenica Atwin says online hate helped push her out of federal politics

Jenica Atwin is leaving federal politics for the “time being” in part because of the online hate she receives, saying the level of toxicity she’s had to face has been surprising. The Fredericton member of Parliament was first elected in 2019 with the Green Party before crossing the aisle to join the Liberals in 2021. It was around the time she joined the party of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that she decided to close her X account “because it was actually harming my mental health.”“Just the constant barrage, the vitriol, the threats, and I think women, in particular my female colleagues, we’ve got it on a different level than a lot of our male colleagues,” she said in a recent interview. She knew that going into politics would make her a target of negative online comments, but the amount o...

Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix: What’s the real story of cancer fraudster Belle Gibson?

Gibson’s story sounds like the plot of a heartbreaking movie. A young, beautiful woman is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given four months to live. Worn down by two months of chemotherapy and radiation, she decides to abandon traditional medicine and take matters into her own hands, instead focusing on healthy eating and alternative treatments. Against all odds, she starts to recover. Somehow, her alternative techniques seem to actually work. Miraculously, she gets pregnant with her first child. If this all sounds a bit far-fetched, that’s because it is. As it turned out, Gibson did not “cure” her cancer. In fact, she didn’t have cancer at all. One of the original wellness bloggers, what happened with Australian influencer Belle Gibson is a bizarre tale that’s full of outlandish c...

Hamas frees 8 more hostages, Israel set to release 110 prisoners – National

Hamas-led militants freed eight hostages on Thursday in the latest release since a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip took hold earlier this month. Israel was expected to release another 110 Palestinian prisoners. The release was delayed by a chaotic scene in which a crowd of Palestinians surrounded and jeered at hostages as they were turned over to the Red Cross. The truce is aimed at winding down the deadliest and most destructive conflict ever fought between Israel and Hamas, whose Oct. 7, 2023, attack into Israel sparked the fighting. It has held despite a dispute earlier this week over the sequence in which the hostages were released. The first hostage, female Israeli soldier Agam Berger, was released in northern Gaza. Hours later, a chaotic scene unfolded as thousands of people pressed around...

Abhishek Banerjee clarifies after being wrongly credited as Paatal Lok 2 writer

Actor Abhishek Banerjee, known for his memorable roles in films and series, is currently facing an identity crisis of a rather unique kind. The confusion? He shares his name with his close friend and talented writer, Abhishek Banerjee. And thanks to this shared name, the actor is now being wrongly credited for work he didn’t do—specifically, writing a few brilliant episodes of Paatal Lok Season 2. Abhishek Banerjee on writer credit confusion The actor, in his signature style, has addressed the mix-up with a mix of amusement and exasperation. Years ago, during their struggling days, he had joked with his friend, “You should really think about changing your name. The day I become famous, people will think I’ve written all your stuff.” Little did he know, his words would one day come true. ...

White blood cell count may signal severity of Covid symptoms in women: Study

A count of white blood cells (leukocytes) may be a crucial indicator for determining debilitating outcomes of Covid-19 in postmenopausal women, according to a new international study on Wednesday.  Even months after the initial diagnosis of Covid -- caused by the SARs-CoV-2 virus -- millions of people worldwide suffer from its ongoing effects.  Cognitive impairment and fatigue are the most common lingering symptoms, with cognitive impairment affecting 70 per cent of patients.  Older adults -- especially women -- are the most at risk, said the researchers from the US, and Singapore. “Post-acute sequelae of Covid infection significantly affects quality of life, often leading to severe disability.  This effect is particularly pronounced in women, who already experience higher rates of cog...
