‘Morrison Hotel’ made famous by The Doors goes up in flames – National

The former Morrison Hotel, made famous by The Doors and their 1970 album of the same name, was significantly damaged by a fire that erupted in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday. The four-story building, which has been vacant more than a decade, burned for nearly two hours before more than 100 firefighters brought the flames under control, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Morrison Hotel was featured on the cover of The Doors’ fifth album. Celebrated music photographer Henry Diltz made the image in 1969 and said years later that it took a little trickery to pull it off. How modern diplomacy is — and isn’t — like how it’s shown on ‘The Diplomat’ – National

A top British diplomat to Canada says the ever-important job of maintaining relationships and information sharing between key allies is not much different than what audiences can watch on a hit Netflix drama. Although The Diplomat is fictional, David Prodger, the British deputy high commissioner to Canada, says the ripped-from-the-headlines storytelling captures what it’s like to keep crises from spilling over from behind the scenes — particularly the “suppressed air of panic” around many of the characters.“I think a lot of those little vignettes were very, very true to to real life,” Prodger told Mercedes Stephenson in an interview that aired Sunday on The West Block.“You’re dealing with big issues, and you’ve got to deal with them quickly as well.”The thriller stars Keri Russell as a car...

Elon Musk causes uproar for backing Germany’s far-right party ahead of elections – National

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of the paper’s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on Feb. 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalize the country’s stagnant economy. 2:09 German snap election looms after finance minister fired, ruling coalition breaks Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag — a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group — pub...

Cooking garlic, onions on high heat may harm your heart health, claims study

Cooking garlic and onions in vegetable oil at high temperatures can generate trans-fatty acids (TFA) and can prove to be detrimental to heart health, claims a study by Japanese researchers. TFAs are harmful fats that can accumulate along artery walls, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of heart attacks. While TFAs are commonly present in processed foods, evidence suggests that they can also be created at home during cooking. Studies indicate that unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs), usually considered beneficial, can undergo trans-isomerisation -- a molecular reconfiguration that transforms them into TFAs when heated at 150 degrees Celsius or higher. To explore, researchers from Meijo University assessed the role of isothiocyanates and polysulfides -- sulphur-containing compounds...

11 favourite London walks you might have missed: from Brockley to Richmond

When I lived in St George’s Square, Pimlico, my favourite walks were always along the River Thames. My journey would start with a coffee and daydream in Pimlico Gardens, whatever the time of day I would notice how high or low the tides were; visually measuring how close the water came up to the base of the bridges. I’d stroll past a few, first Chelsea Bridge and then onto my favourite Albert Bridge; I love that it’s painted pink instead of industrial grey. If time and the weather permits I’ll pop into Chelsea Physic Garden, one of the oldest botanic gardens in Europe to buy some seeds and walk around the meditative gardens. Directly across the river is a great view of The Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park. Then back along Chelsea embankment to Cheyne Walk to see one of my favourite sculptures...

Trailblazing model Dayle Haddon dies after suspected carbon monoxide poisoning – National

Dayle Haddon, an actor, activist and trailblazing former Sports Illustrated model who pushed back against age discrimination by re-entering the industry as a widow, has died in a Pennsylvania home from what authorities believe was carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities in Bucks County found Haddon, 76, dead in a second-floor bedroom Friday morning after emergency dispatchers were notified about a person unconscious at the Solebury Township home. A 76-year-old man police later identified as Walter J. Blucas of Erie was hospitalized in critical condition.Responders detected a high level of carbon monoxide in the property and township police said Saturday that investigators determined that “a faulty flue and exhaust pipe on a gas heating system caused the carbon monoxide leak.” Two medics wer...

Mismatched actor Taaruk Raina: ‘I am not sitting with 10 scripts in front of me’

Surreal is how actor Taaruk Raina describes the audience’s love for the third season of Mismatched. “People get so involved in the show,” marvels the actor, who plays gamer Anmol Malhotra in the Netflix YA series.  Along with leads Rohit Saraf and Prajakta Koli, Raina has been a fan favourite since the show’s première in 2020. One can assume that the series’ popularity must have led to increased opportunities for him. Raina asks us to hold our horses. “The choices have increased. Now, I sometimes have the luxury to pick and choose. But there are only so many things that are offered to [me]. This is a tough business. It’s not like I am sitting with 10 scripts in front of me. For a young actor, it’s a big thing to get a role, and to have it retained in the show. A thousand things have to fa...
