Study finds new way of helping cells defend against cancer

Australian researchers have identified a surprising mechanism focusing on telomeres -- protective caps at the ends of chromosomes -- that can help cells defend against cancer. Telomeres are known to play a key role in ageing and cancer prevention. However, with age, these structures naturally shorten, signaling ageing cells to stop dividing -- a crucial safeguard against cancer, according to the study by Sydney-based Children`s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported. "Our data shows telomeres are much more active. They can acutely respond to stress and actively open up to turn on a cellular response that looks like ageing. They do this to avoid cancer," said Tony Cesare of the Genome Integrity Unit at CMRI. Cesare and his team worked with their collabo...

Trump deports hundreds of immigrants as judge order bars removals – National

The Trump administration has transferred hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador even as a federal judge issued an order temporarily barring the deportations under an 18th century wartime declaration targeting Venezuelan gang members, officials said Sunday. Flights were in the air at the time of the ruling. U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg issued an order Saturday temporarily blocking the deportations, but lawyers told him there were already two planes with immigrants in the air — one headed for El Salvador, the other for Honduras. Boasberg verbally ordered the planes be turned around, but they apparently were not and he did not include the directive in his written order.White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement Sunday, responded to speculation about whether the admin...

AI could predict true biological age from five drops of blood

Scientists at Osaka University in Japan have devised a new AI model to estimate a person’s biological age — a measure of how well their body has aged, rather than just counting the years since birth.  Using just five drops of blood, this new method analyses 22 key steroids and their interactions to provide a more precise health assessment.  The team’s breakthrough study, published in Science Advances, offers a potential step forward in personalised health management, allowing for earlier detection of age-related health risks and tailored interventions. “Our bodies rely on hormones to maintain homeostasis, so we thought, why not use these as key indicators of aging?” said Dr Qiuyi Wang, co-first author of the study.  To test this idea, the research team focused on steroid hormones, whic...

Our Habitas Ras Abrouq hotel review: An indulgent solo trip in Qatar was the perfect de-stresser

But first, I head to Qissa, the hotel’s restaurant for breakfast. To get there from the villa, I follow a dusty path, lined with yellow jasmine and pink grasses. Close by, the placid sea of the Arabian gulf merges with the cobalt sky, as if it is one. I try one of the local specialities, labneh eggs with sourdough, and, as a white egret swoops over the sea, I switch off my phone. Source link

The state of mainstream music: They’re not making stars as big as they used to – National

Norma Desmond hit on something in the 1950 movie Sunset Boulevard. A silent film stars whose career had been decimated by talking pictures, she refused to change with the times. “I am big. It’s the pictures that got small,” she said. Fast-forward to today and that quote could be applied to the concept of mainstream music. We still have stars, but the mainstream got small.Let’s start by defining “mainstream.” These are the ideas, trends, attitudes and activities considered normal, known far and wide, and something in which virtually everyone partakes on some level. Put another way, if the average person knows about something in society, culture or politics, it is part of the mainstream and binds everyone together with common knowledge and attitudes. Before 2000, mainstream attitude dominated...
