Israeli airstrikes on Gaza shatter ceasefire as over 400 killed – National

Israel launched airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, killing at least 404 Palestinians, including women and children, according to hospital officials. The surprise bombardment shattered a ceasefire in place since January and threatened to fully reignite the 17-month-old war. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the strikes after Hamas refused Israeli demands to change the ceasefire agreement. Officials said the operation was open-ended and was expected to expand. The White House said it had been consulted and voiced support for Israel’s actions. The Israeli military ordered people to evacuate eastern Gaza, including much of the northern town of Beit Hanoun and other communities further south, and head toward the center of the territory, indicating that Israel could soon laun...

From Covid to probiotics: Researchers reveal changes in gut microbiota

The `13th Gut Microbiota for Health World Summit` in Washington, DC, over the weekend revealed how cutting-edge research on gut microbiome science is being applied to clinical practice.  The summit showcased the latest microbiome research on coronavirus, plant and dairy-based protein, as well as probiotics. A novel study found that the gut microbiome in children is altered post-COVID-19 infection, much like it is in adults. Researchers found a significant decrease in beneficial bacteria, like Lacticaseibacillus and Bifidobacterium, in children who had COVID-19 compared to those who didn’t. These bacteria help reduce inflammation and support gut health. Children with lingering symptoms also showed different types of bacteria, in addition to elevated markers of inflammation and decreased...

‘Full-tilt assault on legal immigration’: Lawyers urge caution at U.S. border

Immigration lawyers say the case of a Vancouver woman detained in the United States over a denied visa is a warning to other Canadians that it’s no longer business as usual when crossing the border for work. Jasmine Mooney returned to Vancouver this weekend after she was detained for about 12 days when she tried to cross the border near San Diego, Calif.U.S. immigration lawyer Jim Hacking says Mooney’s case joins a growing list of stories over the past 10 days where people “with varying degrees of immigration status” — even one with a permanent-resident card — were either detained or deported in ways not seen before.U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say Mooney was held in accordance with a January executive order by President Donald Trump, and Hacking says the result is a “full-tilt...

What’s left for a Conservative climate plan after the carbon tax? – National

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has made it official: a future Conservative government would eliminate Canada’s carbon pricing system entirely, including for large industrial emitters. The question now is what, if anything, a Conservative government would do to address the existential threat of climate change in Canada. Poilievre’s approach would be to let provinces and territories decide their own policies, rather than the federal government leading.Poilievre told reporters Monday that the carbon price was a “bad idea” even before U.S. President Donald Trump launched his trade war against Canada and suggested Prime Minister Mark Carney would re-impose the consumer price should the Liberals win re-election. “(We) will repeal the entire carbon tax, including the federal backstop that r...

Nissan Qashqai Tekna+ e-Power 2WD: Sports utility upgraded

The Qashqai is a tall car, and that makes getting in and out of it an easier prospect, and the rear side doors open to 90°, which also which helps. Rear headroom is good, even with the test car’s glass roof. Shoulder, knee and foot room aren’t class leading but are otherwise not at all bad. We found the back seat cushion to be a little low. At just over 500 litres with the back seats in place, the boot is a regular shape and a decent size, although once again some rivals have even more space. Source link

‘We will stand united’: Toronto outlines 10 actions in U.S. tariff response

Canada’s largest city and economic capital says it will implement 10 action items to support Canadian businesses and workers in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war. Chow said the short-term actions for immediate relief will cover the next 30 days. Some of the key measures include prioritizing Canadian suppliers in Toronto procurement, allowing industrial properties to defer taxes for six months for cash flow relief, as well as launching a “Love Local” campaign that will encourage people to choose Canadian-made products.“Canada is facing a senseless, harmful trade war. People are feeling anxious. They’re worried about their jobs, the cost of food, the c...

What did Canada’s prime ministers do after leaving office? A look back – National

From careers in law and consulting on geopolitics to teaching, Canada’s former prime ministers have had a wide range of jobs since leaving office. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau remains as the member of Parliament for Papineau until the next federal election. After that, it remains to be seen what he will do next.“Once you’ve been prime minister,  you have a certain name and profile, so that carries a lot of weight with a lot of corporations, corporate executives and especially carries weight with the developing world,” said Nelson Wiseman, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto. But while Trudeau’s path is not yet known, here’s a look at where some of those before him went when they left office. After his defeat in the 2015 federal election, Stephen Harper launched the Calg...

Study finds new way of helping cells defend against cancer

Australian researchers have identified a surprising mechanism focusing on telomeres -- protective caps at the ends of chromosomes -- that can help cells defend against cancer. Telomeres are known to play a key role in ageing and cancer prevention. However, with age, these structures naturally shorten, signaling ageing cells to stop dividing -- a crucial safeguard against cancer, according to the study by Sydney-based Children`s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported. "Our data shows telomeres are much more active. They can acutely respond to stress and actively open up to turn on a cellular response that looks like ageing. They do this to avoid cancer," said Tony Cesare of the Genome Integrity Unit at CMRI. Cesare and his team worked with their collabo...
