Harper Is an Offline Alternative to Grammarly for Obsidian

Obsidian is my favorite productivity tool. I use it for all of my writing, as a journaling app, and to replace multiple productivity tools. There's a big downside, though: no grammar checking tool.Grammarly is the best known grammar checking tool, but there's no way to add it to Obsidian. I also wouldn't enable it even if I could. Grammarly processes text on their own servers, which is a potential privacy issue and also generally inefficient. This is why I've come to love Harper, a free and open-source alternative that runs entirely on your device and can be added to Obsidian in a couple of clicks.Harper isn't just an Obsidian tool—there are also plugins for WordPress, Visual Studio Code, or any developer tool that supports the Language Server Protocol. If you'd like to see Harper in actio...

Pinworm medication may treat aggressive skin cancer: Researchers

A team of US scientists has found that a common pinworm medication may stop and reverse cancer growth in Merkel cell carcinoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.  The research led by University of Arizona Cancer Center and published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that in laboratory models of Merkel cell carcinoma, pyrvinium pamoate inhibited cancer cell growth and reversed the cancer’s neuroendocrine features. In mouse models of Merkel cell carcinoma, pyrvinium pamoate reduced tumour growth. Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare but fast-growing neuroendocrine cancer that is three to five times more likely than melanoma to be deadly. Response rates to current therapies – surgery, radiation and immunotherapy – are limited, resulting in a need for effective and broadly applica...

ANALYSIS: Pierre Poilievre would axe one of Parliament’s primary purposes – National

Tucked away amid a host pledges in the Conservative platform is a promise to axe one of Parliament’s primary purposes. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced Tuesday that under his government a referendum, not politicians, would decide if Canada needed to raise taxes. Poilievre would “ban” any new taxes or tax increases unless the Canadian public votes for them. The platform commitment is in keeping with Poilievre’s overall theme of tax relief for Canadians, requiring any new spending to be found through savings in other programs, and generally shrinking the size and cost of the federal government. We can all probably guess the answer if the Canadian public were asked “do you want higher taxes,” and that answer can’t be published by a family-friendly news outlet. But leaving aside suc...

More doctors, easier licensing: Health ideas from Canada’s parties you may have missed – National

While health care hasn’t taken centre stage in the 2025 federal election, candidates recently brought it back into focus, unveiling platforms that spotlight key health issues — from the need for more family doctors to better access to mental health support. The Liberal platform, released by the party’s leader, Mark Carney, on Saturday, touches on health care with proposals to hire more physicians and create a national licensing system so doctors and nurses can move easily from province to province to address shortages.Meanwhile, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh released his party’s platform on Saturday. The platform includes several health care commitments, such as promising that every Canadian can access primary care and a family doctor by 2030.Then, on Tuesday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poiliev...

Do you consume fatty, sugary foods? It may impair brain function, finds study

In a significant study, researchers have linked fatty and sugary diets to impaired cognitive function. The team from University of Sydney looked at the relationship between high-fat, high-sugar (HFHS) diets, particularly those high in refined sugar and saturated fat, and first-person spatial navigation. Spatial navigation is the ability to learn and remember a path from one location to another, a process that can approximate the health of the brain’s hippocampus, said the study published in the International Journal of Obesity. Dr Dominic Tran from the Faculty of Science’s School of Psychology led the research, which found HFHS diets have a detrimental effect on some aspects of cognitive function. It is likely those effects centre on the hippocampus, the brain structure important for s...
