Zohran Mamdani slammed for eating with hands but doctors say it’s healthier

Indians have for the longest time been eating with their hands but somehow it always seems to be troublesome in the West, as is the case of Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani, who has been in the news for his role in the New York mayoral candidacy. Amid his growing popularity as a favourite to get the post, the politician who is the son of much-loved filmmaker Mira Nair, was subject to unnecessary criticism because of his way of eating food.  Amid heated competition, Republican Brandon Gill slammed Mamdani for eating rice with his hands in an old video. In a post on X, he said, “Civilized people in America don’t eat like this. If you refuse to adopt Western customs, go back to the Third World." Android Users Will Soon Be Able to Edit Texts Sent to Their Friends on iPhone

Texting between iPhones and Androids used to be a slog. That's because Apple limited its users to SMS when messaging Androids, which stripped away many of the modern chat features we've gotten used to—like, say, functioning group chats. That radically changed once Apple rolled out support for RCS: This messaging protocol had been standard on Android for years, but by allowing iPhones to use it rather than SMS, suddenly "green bubbles" conversations weren't so crummy. On the contrary, RCS adds most of the key iMessage perks you might expect, like typing indicators, high-quality image and video sharing, and, of course, functioning group chats. But the transition isn't complete yet. RCS actually supports more features than these, though just not on iOS. That includes end-to-end encryption (...

Diddy trial jury reaches verdict on all but the most serious charge – National

The jury in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex trafficking trial said Tuesday that it has reached a verdict on four of five counts against the hip-hop mogul and was unable to reach a decision on the top charge, racketeering conspiracy. But the outcome of any of the charges was not yet clear. The judge told the jury to hold off announcing its partial verdict and instead to continue weighing the remaining charge. Like prosecutors and Combs’ defense team, Judge Arun Subramanian reasoned that after just two days of deliberations, it was too soon to give up on reaching a verdict on all counts. The development came late Tuesday afternoon, when the jury sent a note saying it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on the racketeering conspiracy charge because there were jurors with “unpersuadable views” on b...

This new AI tool can detect 9 types of dementia from single brain scan

In a significant achievement for identifying neurodegenerative diseases early, a team of US researchers has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that helps clinicians detect brain activity patterns linked to nine types of dementia using a single and widely available scan.  The tool, StateViewer, not only helped in early detection but also provided accurate diagnosis -- it identified the dementia type in 88 per cent of cases, including Alzheimer`s disease. It also enabled clinicians to interpret brain scans nearly twice as fast and with up to three times greater accuracy than standard workflows, according to the research, published online in the journal Neurology. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic trained and tested the AI on more than 3,600 scans, including images from patie...

B.C. reports offer ‘road map’ for repatriation of Indigenous historical items

A pair of reports out of British Columbia are detailing the complex, expensive and under resourced process of repatriating Indigenous historical items or remains back to their homes. The studies, developed in partnership between the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and K’yuu Enterprise Corporation, call for changes including the creation of a centralized body to facilitate the work, a repatriation accreditation program for museums and other institutions, and “substantial” funding and support from the provincial and federal government.Gretchen Fox, an anthropologist and the council’s acting heritage manager, said the growing interest in the moral and ethical requirement for repatriation shows resources are needed to set out steps that could be used in B.C. and in other provinces and territor...
