Conservatives dominate Alberta in federal election, few wins for Liberals and NDP

Alberta remained solidly Conservative blue in Monday’s federal election, dominating in all but a handful of ridings while bucking the national trend that saw Mark Carney’s Liberals returned for a fourth term. In smaller centres and rural areas, Conservatives were elected and re-elected, many in landslide numbers, including Garnett Genuis in Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan, Shannon Stubbs in Lakeland, Michelle Rempel Garner in Calgary Nose Hill, Rachael Thomas in Lethbridge and John Barlow in Foothills. As of 12 a.m. Tuesday, Global News was projecting Conservative wins in 32 of the province’s 37 ridings. In Calgary, George Chahal made history in 2021, becoming the first Liberal to win a seat in Parliament from the southern Alberta city since 1968. Early Tuesday however, he was trailing to Co...

Descrease article font size Increase article font size Green Party co-leader Elizabeth May has been re-elected in her Vancouver Island seat of Saanich-Gulf Islands. May fended off challenges from Liberal David Beckham and Conservative Cathie Ounsted, while the NDP’s Colin Plant placed a distant fourth.May credited her win to her campaign’s ground game, but said it was an uphill battle amid intense media speculation she would lose the race.“It developed a momentum based on a rumour, and it became a very hard thing to fight,” he said.“And the reason we were successful here … Greens win, and we’ve always seen this from the devotion and the commitment of volunteers.”May won the riding handily in 2021 with 37.6 per cent of the vote, compared to 22....

‘It’s almost like a mania’: How Trump won Carney the federal election

Mark Carney has done the unthinkable. With little more than a month’s experience as a politician under his belt, the career bureaucrat brought a flatlining Liberal Party back from the brink and, on Monday night, was projected to win the most extraordinary election in Canada’s recent history. Not that you’d know it from the crowd size at Liberal Party headquarters — Lansdowne Park’s TD Place — as votes began streaming in. At about 10.15pm on Monday night, a raucous applause erupted from a modest crowd assembled on the arena floor when the major media outlets projected a Carney win. But up until about 9.30pm, the cavernous arena was completely devoid of anyone but journalists and security; Liberal supporters were out canvassing until the minute the polls closed. As of midnight, it is still unc...

Nikita Dutta calls Jewel Thief `an indirect manifestation into the universe`

For actress Nikita Dutta "Jewel Thief – The Heist Begins" was the kind of film she had long hoped to be part of, stylish, suspenseful, and rooted in a genre she genuinely loves.  For someone who had been watching a lot of heist thrillers recently, the timing felt less like coincidence and more like destiny. Opening up about how she landed the role, Nikita shared, “I happened to get a call from Mamta (Anand), saying that we’re making a film like this, would you be keen? When I heard the script for the first time, I was absolutely on board because I tell you honestly I have been personally really enjoying the genre. Through the different re-workings of the script, we found the beauty of Farah, who has substance, she is finding her voice and has a whole lot of oomph which is what I loved." ...

Ultra-processed foods may increase risk of preventable premature deaths: Study

Do you regularly eat ready-to-eat-or-heat foods? Previous studies have linked UPFs -- rich in sodium, trans fats, and sugar -- with 32 different diseases including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, some types of cancer, and depression. The new study analysed data from nationally representative dietary surveys and mortality data from eight countries (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, United Kingdom, and the US). The findings published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, show that premature deaths attributable to consumption of UPFs increase significantly according to their share in ind...
