Indian researchers develop new peptide therapy to treat eye infections

A team of researchers from Bose Institute in Kolkata has developed a peptide therapy that offers a promising, multidisciplinary approach to treating fungal keratitis -- a severe, sight-threatening infection of the cornea -- the clear front part of the eye.  The team, including researchers from the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, designed a 15-residue peptide, named SA-XV, derived from a larger host-defense peptide -- S100A12. This peptide, previously shown to inhibit fungal growth, has been characterised for its antifungal potency and mechanism of action. Published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the researchers hailed the new therapy as an alternative to antimycotics (antifungals) with reduced side effects. Corneal infections, often referred to as a slow epidemic, affect...

Gemini 3 Flash Outperforms Gemini 3 Pro and GPT 5.2 In These Key Benchmarks

The AI wars continue to heat up. Just weeks after OpenAI declared a "code red" in its race against Google, the latter released its latest lightweight model: Gemini 3 Flash. This particular Flash is the latest in Google's Gemini 3 family, which started with Gemini 3 Pro, and Gemini 3 Deep Think. But while this latest model is meant to be a lighter, less expensive variant of the existing Gemini 3 models, Gemini 3 Flash is actually quite powerful in its own right. In fact, it beats out both Gemini 3 Pro and OpenAI's GPT-5.2 models in some benchmarks.Lightweight models are typically meant for more basic queries, for lower-budget requests, or to be run on lower-powered hardware. That means they're often faster than more powerful models that take longer to process, but can do more. According to ...

INST researchers develop new therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, have identified a new pathway involving nanoparticles to treat Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), said the Ministry of Science & Technology on Tuesday.  Conventional Alzheimer’s therapies often target only a single pathological feature, such as amyloid aggregation or oxidative stress, yielding limited clinical benefit. However, the new therapy involves nanoparticles that integrate polyphenol with antioxidant properties found in green tea, a neurotransmitter, and an amino acid. It has the potential to treat Alzheimer’s Disease by changing the path of the progression of the disease, slowing it, improving memory, and supporting thinking skills, said the researchers in the paper, published in the journal Small. The ther...

‘They came to us,’ Carney says on Conservative MPs crossing the floor – National

The former Conservative MPs who crossed the floor over to the Liberals “came to us,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said in an interview with Global News, adding that he did not “lure” them but that they were “attracted” to the work his government has been doing. In a wide-ranging interview with Global National anchor and executive editor Dawna Friesen that will air in full on Dec. 25, Carney was asked if he was involved in luring or courting the Opposition MPs to join the Liberals.“I wouldn’t have chosen that verb: lure, or courting. What I would choose is, they are attracted by what we are doing. And that’s a key element,” Carney said. The prime minister said he did play a role in the process and was asked whether he expects others will make the same decision to join the Liberals. Sto...

Susie Wiles speaks on Trump in Vanity Fair interviews – National

Susie Wiles, United States President Donald Trump’s understated but influential chief of staff, criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case and offered an unvarnished take on her boss and those in his orbit in interviews published Tuesday in Vanity Fair that sent the West Wing into damage control. The startlingly candid remarks from Wiles, the first woman to ever hold her current post, included describing the president as someone with “an alcoholic’s personality,” and Vice President JD Vance as a calculating “conspiracy theorist.” The observations from Wiles, who rarely speaks publicly given the behind-the-scenes nature of her job running the White House, prompted questions about whether the chief of staff might be on her way out.Wiles pushed back after the...
