15 Movies and Shows Like ‘Pluribus’ You Should Watch Next

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's new series Pluribus has earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. It's just an excellent show, featuring an end-of-the-world science fiction story with a wildly inventive apocalypse: instead of zombies or nuclear bombs, Pluribus' world ends with humanity literally coming together. Through a transmission from space, everyone on Earth is melded into a single consciousness, so there's no more conflict or hunger, but there's no more individuality, either. Mysteriously, a handful of people were left out of the great melting, including Carol (Rhea Seehorn) a cynical, hard-drinking writer who refuses to give in to the collective. The only thing I don't like about Pluribus is that I can't...

Carney’s federal budget faces critical confidence vote in House of Commons – National

Descrease article font size Increase article font size The Liberal government’s federal budget will be put to a vote in the House of Commons Monday, setting up a critical test for Prime Minister Mark Carney. The budget vote will be a matter of confidence, which the minority Liberals will need to survive in order to remain in power. If the government falls, it could trigger a snap election — forcing Canadians to the polls for the second time this year. The Conservatives and Bloc Québécois have already signalled they won’t support the budget, with each party saying it did not address their respective priorities.Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, the party’s sole MP, has called for stronger climate change commitments in order to earn her vote. ...

Study: Hypertension can heighten the risk of cognitive impairment

Hypertension can start impairing major brain cells responsible for cognition well before blood pressure increases by a measurable amount, according to a study conducted on mice, which can help explain how the condition is a major risk factor for cognitive impairment. Findings published in the journal Neuron suggest that hypertension may induce early changes in how genes in a brain cell express themselves and could interfere with one`s thinking and memory, researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College said. The study can provide clues for finding ways through which neurodegeneration -- seen in disorders such as Alzheimer`s -- could be blocked, they said. Having high blood pressure has been shown to heighten one`s risk of cognitive impairment, usually seen to precede Alzheimer`s disease ...

Vidya Balan gets candid about campaigning for child safety week

Sometimes, a character doesn’t leave an actor long after the film is over, living inside them as a cause. For Vidya Balan, Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh (2016) would be one such movie. Since leading the thriller that depicted her as a survivor of child sexual abuse, the actor has been involved with the non-profit organisation Arpan to raise awareness about the issue and the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. This year, she leads its campaign, POCSO Pakad Lega. “Arpan instituted the Child Safety Week in 2019. Slowly, this initiative has been growing in terms of visibility. When they approached me to lend my voice to the campaign this year, I was more than happy. It was another step forward in the right direction,” Balan tells mid-day. Vidya Balan played a survivor of c...

Danko Jones on new album ‘Leo Rising’ and what it takes to grind it out on the road – National

I’ve been following Toronto’s Danko Jones and his band — the hardest-working power trio in Canada —since they first appeared in 1996. While his group has found considerable success outside of Canada, it’s been a long, hard road. But that’s what it takes if you wanna rock’n’roll. I spoke to Jones just ahead of the band’s 12th album, Leo Rising, which will be out on Friday, Nov. 21. Alan Cross: How many years have you been doing this?Danko Jones: Twenty-nine.AC: Did you ever expect that this would become your life’s work?DJ: No. When we started this band, it was only on the heels of finishing our last local band’s record for me and JC (bass player John Calabrese) and we had no expectations past maybe putting out a cassette demo or a seven-inch. We just kept going. We kind of painted ourselve...

Diabetes surges among young Indians as diagnostic data shows spike in screenings

India`s battle against diabetes is entering a new phase as diagnostic data and clinical experts warn of a marked rise in the disease among younger adults. Once confined to middle age, Type 2 diabetes is now increasingly being detected in people in their twenties and early thirties, a shift doctors describe as both alarming and preventable. Recent Indian studies estimate that approximately 101 million adults in India are living with diabetes, with an additional 136 million exhibiting signs of pre-diabetes. Corresponding with this escalating health challenge, Mahajan Imaging and Labs, one of Delhi NCR`s leading integrated diagnostic chains, reports a significant surge in metabolic and glucose screenings among adults under 40 in 2025. Of those tested, nearly 38 per cent of fasting glucose r...

Ukraine working on exchange deal to bring home 1,200 prisoners: Zelenskyy – National

Ukraine is working to resume prisoner exchanges with Russia that could bring home 1,200 Ukrainian prisoners, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday, a day after his national security chief announced progress in negotiations. “We are … counting on the resumption of POW exchanges,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.“Many meetings, negotiations and calls are currently taking place to ensure this.”We are working to ensure another start to negotiations, so that after all there is a prospect to end this war. We are also counting on the resumption of POW exchanges – many meetings, negotiations, and calls are currently taking place to ensure this. IIT-M researchers identify physiological markers to predict, manage test anxiety

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras have identified measurable physiological indicators that can help pinpoint students most vulnerable to test anxiety, paving the way for new, targeted interventions that could revolutionise how educational systems approach stress and performance, according to officials. The research has been published in Behavioural Brain Research, an international peer-reviewed journal publishing studies on the neurobiological basis of behaviour and cognitive processes in humans and animals. The study sheds light on how the brain and heart interact differently in students who struggle with anxiety during exams, offering a scientific basis for early identification and personalised coping strategies. Test anxiety affects an estimated 81 per c...

Older Pixel Devices Can Now Record Calls Directly in the Phone App

Good news, Android users: It no longer matters whether or not you have one of Google's latest and greatest devices—at least when it comes to recording calls with Google's Phone app. As spotted by 9to5Google, Google just opened up call recording in its app to Pixel 6 and newer. You won't get access to the Phone app's latest AI features, but if all you want is a reliable way to record phone calls, you'll be set. Google announced this new rollout back in September, calling the ability to record calls a "fundamentally useful feature," even without transcription or automatic note taking. That's certainly true: While the idea of recording phone calls might strike some as nefarious, there are many legitimate applications for recording phone calls, from journalists seeking a record of an phone int...
