Wireless Charging Is About to Get a Lot Faster

The Qi wireless charging standard has been around since 2010, and it's changed quite a bit in those 15 years. What started as a puny 5W standard has evolved to, widely, 15W—not blazing fast, but still quick enough to make it worthwhile. And with the Qi2 standard, the industry adopted Apple's MagSafe design. Since then, you've been able to buy chargers that magnetically connect to the wireless charging coils in your devices, so you don't need to worry about lining everything up perfectly to charge. Qi2 has been a standard since 2023, and even when it launched, it promised improvements down the road. Notably, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), which develops the standard, said that Qi2's 15W power transfer would increase in the future, allowing for faster charging. Now, in 2025, it appears...

Hearing loss, loneliness may accelerate dementia risk in elderly: Study

Hearing loss combined with the feelings of loneliness accelerates cognitive decline, leading to dementia in older adults, according to a study. Researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) in Switzerland showed that isolation, communication difficulties, reduced alertness, and hearing impairment or loss are a real challenge in daily life. The findings, published in the journal Communications Psychology, showed that hearing loss accelerates cognitive decline, particularly among individuals who feel lonely, regardless of whether they are socially isolated. ‘‘We found that people who were not socially isolated but who felt lonely saw their cognitive decline accelerate when they were deaf,’’ said Matthias Kliegel, professor in the Cognitive Ageing Laboratory in UNIGE. The team analyse...

Ford, Carney governments told to ‘do some homework’ on duties to First Nations

The group of Ontario First Nations taking the federal and provincial governments to court over fast-track legislation, which will sidestep or suspend a range of legal protections, says the Crown is failing in its duties. The action looks to have a court rule the entirety of Ontario’s Bill 5 unconstitutional, as well as large parts of the federal government’s Bill C-5.At Queen’s Park on Wednesday, four of the First Nations leaders involved spoke about their concerns with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney’s approach.“I would say they’re less informed,” Alderville First Nation Chief Taynar Simpson said. “I would say they nee...

How Canada’s oil sands transformed into one of North America’s lowest-cost energy producers

Giant shovels, driverless trucks and a dog-like robot have all helped Canada’s oil sands companies including Imperial Oil and Suncor become some of North America’s lowest-cost oil producers, driving down overheads even as the worst inflation in a generation pushed U.S. shale costs up. As the global oil industry enters a downturn due to economic uncertainty related to U.S. tariffs policy and OPEC+ pumping more barrels, Canada’s oil sands industry finds itself in a position of strength. In the years following the oil price crash of 2014-15, international oil majors including BP, Chevron and Total sold their interests in Canadian oil sands. At the time, they classified the Canadian operations as among their more expensive, and therefore less profitable, projects worldwide. They directed their ca...

Salt consumption in India exceeds WHO-recommended limit: ICMR

Indians consume salt 2.2 times more than the amount recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), posing severe health risks such as hypertension, strokes, and kidney disease, among others, according to ICMR`s National Institute of Epidemiology. WHO recommends less than 5 grams per day of salt (roughly under a teaspoon) or below 2g of sodium per day. However, “the mean salt consumption per day by an Indian is 11 grams per day, which is 2.2 times more than the WHO recommendation”, the ICMR-NIE said. According to the apex research body, regular iodised salt contains 40 per cent of sodium, much higher than the WHO limit. The WHO also suggests the use of low-sodium salt to ward off the risk. “Major salt source is hidden in Indian diet and the hidden salt is fuelling a real risk,” sai...
