Magic Leap, One of the Biggest Flops in AR, Is Back with Smart Glasses

Magic Leap is back. The tech company, now owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, today revealed a prototype for a pair of Android XR smart glasses made as a "reference design for the Android XR ecosystem," and announced it had extended its partnership with Google. The AR glasses have thicker-than-normal frames, but not ridiculously so, and seem to have a camera. But that’s about all we know: there's no word on availability or what the glasses actually do.While Magic Leap didn't reveal a ton of concrete details about its new shades, it did say they combine "Magic Leap’s waveguides and optics with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine" with the goal being an all-day AR wearable. "Magic Leap and Google’s collaboration is focused on developing AR glasses prototypes that balance visua...

Food aid at risk of expiring as effort to fund SNAP benefits fails in Senate – National

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican leaders in Congress said it’s all or nothing on Wednesday as they rejected a Democratic push to carve out funding to continue food aid for more than 40 million Americans who stand to lose it as part of the government shutdown. Democrats have repeatedly voted against reopening the government as they demand that Republicans negotiate with them to extend expiring health care subsidies. But they pushed for expedited approval of legislation to continue funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, in the meantime.“It’s simple, it’s moral, it’s urgent,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said as he called for passage of the SNAP funding Wednesday.Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., angrily objected to the Democratic request, calling i...

Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff gambles on shutdown to save health subsidies as reelection bid looms – National

ATLANTA (AP) — There may be no rank-and-file Democratic senator with more at stake from the federal government shutdown than Georgia’s Jon Ossoff. He is the party’s only senator who is seeking reelection next year in a state that Republican Donald Trump won in 2024, and any chance that Democrats may have in regaining Senate control depends on Ossoff holding the seat. As the second-longest shutdown in history drags on and Democrats insist on extending expanded Affordable Care Act subsidies beyond year’s end, more people in Georgia than most other states are likely to lose health insurance if the tax credits go away.Ossoff, like other Democrats, is betting that stand is sound policy and good politics, too.“Georgians don’t want their health insurance premiums to skyrocket, and they want the f...

Lack of focus when sleep-deprived may be brain’s way of clearing waste: Study

Attention lapses due to sleep-deprivation could be because the brain is trying to catch up with waste cleansing -- which typically happens while sleeping -- during the day, a new study has suggested. The cerebrospinal fluid, which flows into and around the brain and spinal cord cushions the central nervous system from shocks, helps remove waste from the brain that was built during the day through `flushing`. It is considered important for maintaining brain health and function. "If you don`t sleep, the cerebrospinal fluid waves start to intrude into wakefulness where normally you wouldn`t see them. However, they come with an attentional tradeoff, where attention fails during the moments that you have this wave of fluid flow," said Laura Lewis, associate professor of electrical engineering...

Elon Musk’s ‘Grokipedia’ Is Certainly No Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a treasured online resource that, despite massive changes across the web, has managed to remained truly great to this day. I, alongside millions of other users, visit the site daily to learn something new or double-check existing knowledge. In an age of non-stop AI slop, Wikipedia is something of an antidote. If you look at Wikipedia and think "this is alright, but an AI version would be a lot better," you might just be Elon Musk. Musk's AI company, xAI, just launched Grokipedia—yes, that really is its name—an online encyclopedia that closely resembles Wikipedia in name and surface-level appearance. But under the hood, the two could hardly be any more different. Though it's early days for the new "encyclopedia," I'd say it's not worth using, at least not for anything real. Th...

World Stroke Day 2025: Here`s the importance of golden 4.5 hours

Every minute counts during a stroke, said Nithin Kamath, co-founder and CEO of Zerodha on Wednesday, while stressing the need to seek immediate medical help within the golden 4.5 hours after suffering the brain condition.  World Stroke Day is observed every year on October 29 to raise awareness about strokes, which occur when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. During the attack, brain cells die every second; thus, early medications are key to boosting survival. Taking to social media platform X, Kamath, who survived a stroke last year, shared how strokes can be better managed if medical help is sought within 4.5 hours -- known as the Golden Hour. If strokes are not treated immediately within the window, it can lead to permanent brain damage and disability. He shared that many peopl...
