B.C.’s softwood lumber U.S. tariffs now higher than Russia’s: ‘Let that sink in’

B.C. Premier David Eby is issuing a stark warning to the federal government as the province’s softwood lumber industry faces additional duties and tariffs from the U.S., which he said has left many forest companies on a “razor’s edge of survival.” Softwood lumber being exported from B.C. to the U.S. now faces an estimated 45 per cent in extra taxes.“Today marks the beginning of an additional attack on workers, on communities, on the Canadian forest sector by President Donald Trump, an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canadian forest products,” Eby said at a press conference on Tuesday.“This additional tariff means that Canadian wood has a higher tariff rate going to the United States than Russia does. I want to let that sink in. That there’s a higher tariff on Canadian wood going to the Un...

Ford says there’s ‘no damn way’ tariffs on Chinese EVs should be scrapped

Premier Doug Ford insists there isn’t a major split in ‘Team Canada’ approach, as prairie provinces urge the federal government to drop electric vehicle tariffs, which are in place predominantly to shield Ontario jobs. A letter from Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew to Prime Minister Mark Carney last week urged him to drop 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, after China’s ambassador suggested his country would end its crippling canola tariffs in response.“Seize the opportunity presented by recent remarks from the Chinese ambassador to Canada,” Kinew wrote. “He indicated that China is prepared to lift its tariffs on Canadian canola and pork if Canada removes the 100 per cent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles.”Tariffs on canola were introduced after Canada added tariffs t...

How to Fix Randomly Crashing Apps on Your Pixel 10

If you've been experiencing random crashes on your Pixel 10 smartphone, you're not alone. Over the weekend, multiple Reddit users complained that their Pixel 10 phones, which only just hit the market in August, were already facing severe slowdowns and frequent crashes while trying to load apps. Worse yet, the problem seemed to persist across all apps and models of the phone, leaving users with little they could actually do on their new devices. "If an app does open and load it won't let me touch anything and it crashes," user cdriese said, with a number of others sharing a similar sentiment. The unfortunate news took me as a bit of a surprise, since I experienced no such issues while reviewing the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro at launch, both of which I quite liked. But the problem, it seems, o...

Toronto’s Downsview selected as first location for federal modular housing plan

A Toronto housing mega project across the sprawling Downsview lands is set to receive a double funding boost from city council and the federal government, with plans to expand infrastructure in the area and build more than 500 modular homes. A gaggle of federal and municipal leaders gathered on the site — which is planned to host more than 100,000 people when it is completed — on Tuesday to announce that their vision for a “city within a city” was set to move forward.Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said $425 million in city funding and $280 million from the federal government would combine to expand the area’s Black Creek Trunk Sewer, which is nearing capacity.Expanding the 1960s sewer was the key, she said, to “unlocking the potential of this neighbourhood.” Without the upgrades, work on 63,000...

New antibiotic to curb dangerous gut bacterium with a low dose

The new antibiotic EVG7 has demonstrated the ability to fight the dangerous gut bacterium C. difficile with only a minimal dose, a new study showed.  C. difficile is a persistent intestinal bacterium that can cause severe illness, particularly in older people and those with weakened health. The bacterium produces a toxin that leads to severe diarrhoea. Current treatments are not always effective, as the infection often returns. "With existing antibiotics, C. difficile sometimes reappears just weeks after treatment," said researcher and lead author Elma Mons, from the varsity. "This happens partly because the bacterium leaves behind spores, which can develop into new bacteria, causing the infection to return," Mons said. The team investigated the effect of a low dose of EVG7 on C. diff...

4 things to watch for in the Newfoundland and Labrador election – National

Voters in Newfoundland and Labrador head to the polls today to elect their next provincial government. Here are four things to keep an eye on as the results roll in. 1. Will Newfoundland and Labrador voters pass the torch? The Liberals have been in power for a decade in Canada’s easternmost province, though their dominance has waned. They won a decisive victory in 2015, taking 31 of 40 seats in the legislature after more than 10 years of Progressive Conservative government. But as this year’s election campaign got underway, the Liberals held 19 of 40 seats, and the Progressive Conservatives held 14.Tory Leader Tony Wakeham’s main campaign message is that it’s time for change. He has repeatedly asked voters to consider whether their lives have been improved after 10 years of Liberal rule. ...

You Can Now Hide Sponsored Ads in Google Search

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding my work at Lifehacker as a preferred source.Google's sponsored ads are generally a pain. Not only are they often not relevant to what you're searching for, they can occasionally be malicious: You might think you're clicking on a legitimate link for something you've searched for, but you're actually heading somewhere else entirely. Together with all the new AI components Google has introduced in recent years, it's increasingly tough to get the search results you're actually looking for. But there's some small good news on this front: As initially reported by The Verge, Google's sponsored ads are getting a little less annoying. Previously, these ads would appear one after...
