Government: 99 pct drop in prevalence rate of leprosy in India in last 44 years

India has seen a remarkable success in control of leprosy, with a 99 per cent drop in prevalence rate per 10,000 population and 98 per cent reduction in cases under treatment over a span of 44 years, according to the government.   As per an official statement, India in 2025 had a prevalence rate of 0.57 per 10,000 population and 0.82 lakh patients on treatment. In stark contrast, the country in 1981 had a prevalence rate of 57.2 per 10,000 population and 39.19 lakh patients on treatment. Since March 2006, when the annual report confirmed a prevalence rate of less than 1 per 10,000 (0.84), there has also been a decline of 37 per cent in new case detection. Leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae bacteria. Symptoms include discoloured s...

What to Do Before Microsoft Cuts Off Support for Windows 10 Next Week

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding Lifehacker as a preferred source for tech news.Attention, PC users: The end of Windows 10 support is just one week away. Microsoft is cutting off most support for the older operating system on Oct. 14, 2025, pushing users toward Windows 11. That said, the company is giving users who can't (or don't want to) let go of Windows 10 more options to receive security updates for an additional year. One of the risks of not upgrading to Windows 11 by the deadline is that your device won't be protected against viruses and hackers—unless you take advantage of one of the free or paid options to enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU). (Note that Microsoft has also extended suppor...

The Ba***ds of Bollywood: Raghav Juyal recalls crying during Emraan Hashmi scene

We killed it!’ That, Raghav Juyal tells us, is the gist of the countless messages director Aryan Khan and he have been exchanging since The Ba***ds of Bollywood dropped on Netflix a fortnight ago. “We tell each other, ‘Bhai, yeh toh hona hi tha’. I don’t know about others, but Aryan and I were confident that the show would be well-received,” says Juyal of Khan’s directorial debut.  The Bobby Deol, Mona Singh, Lakshya, and Sahher Bambba-starrer has many things going for it — its tongue-in-cheek humour, sincere performances by the leads, and star-studded cameos. Juyal’s act as Parvaiz, part problem-fixer and part troublemaker, stands out with its hilarity. Yet, he reveals that many advised him against portraying the role after Kill (2023), which saw him as a ruthless antagonist. “Everyone a...

Feds call Marineland euthanasia threat ‘inappropriate’ as deadline nears

The federal government is punting responsibility for 30 whales at Marineland back to Ontario, as a deadline from the struggling theme park over the fate of the belugas rapidly draws closer. On Friday, Marineland warned that without an immediate financial bailout from the federal government, “for ongoing whale care until a suitable relocation can be arranged,” the company may be forced to declare bankruptcy or euthanize the animals.“Our only options at this point are to either relocate the whales or face the devastating decision of euthanasia,” the Niagara Falls, Ont., attraction said in a letter to the federal government, which was shared with Global News.On Monday, Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson called Marineland’s request for federal funding “inappropriate” and said she inten...

The Nobel Prize in medicine goes to three scientists

Mary E Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance. Peripheral immune tolerance is one way the body helps keep the immune system from getting out of whack and attacking your own tissues instead of foreign invaders. The award is the first of the 2025 Nobel Prize announcements and was announced by a panel at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Last year`s prize was shared by Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA, tiny bits of genetic material that serve as on and off switches inside cells that help control what the cells do and when they do it. Canada’s federal budgets will come in the fall now, minister says – National

The federal government is shifting when it releases the budgets going forward, a move that comes after the decision announced last month to release Budget 2025 on Nov. 4. This means the economic update, which normally occurs near the end of the year, will now be pushed to the spring of each year under Prime Minister Mark Carney. In a release from the Department of Finance, the government says this move is aimed at “modernizing” the budget timeline to better line up with the timelines of other sectors and industries like “builders, businesses, investors, provinces, territories, and municipalities.”“Starting with Budget 2025, the federal budget will be tabled in the fall, with an economic and fiscal update released in the spring,” the release said.“This change will provide the certainty and p...

France’s new prime minister resigns hours after naming government – National

France’s new prime minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned less than 24 hours after naming his government and after less than a month in office, plunging the country into a deep political crisis and leaving French President Emmanuel Macron with few options. The French presidency said in a statement Monday that Macron, who has been hitting record lows in opinion polls, has accepted his resignation.Lecornu had replaced his predecessor, François Bayrou, in September to become France’s fourth prime minister in barely a year during a prolonged period of political instability.French politics have been in disarray since Macron called snap elections last year that produced a deeply fragmented legislature and a political impasse. Far-right and left-wing lawmakers hold over 320 seats at the National Ass...
