Supreme Court will decide Biden-GOP clash over social media and COVID disinformation

WASHINGTON —  The Supreme Court agreed Friday to hear a second major case on social media and will decide whether the Biden White House violated the 1st Amendment when it urged platforms to take down “misinformation and disinformation” about COVID-19.Three conservatives dissented and said the court should have kept in place a judge’s order that barred administration officials from contacting social media sites.“Government censorship of private speech is antithetical to our democratic form of government,” Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil M. Gorsuch wrote, calling the court’s move to rule on the issue “highly disturbing.”The justices now have before them two contrasting views of how the 1st Amendment’s right to free speech applies to social media, bot...

Pig-Heart Transplant Recipient Is Doing Well After a Month

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s been a month since a Maryland man became the second person to receive a transplanted heart from a pig—and hospital video released Friday shows he’s working hard to recover.Lawrence Faucette was dying from heart failure and ineligible for a traditional heart transplant when doctors at the University of Maryland School of Medicine offered the highly experimental surgery. In the first glimpse of Faucette provided since the Sept. 20 transplant, hospital video shows physical therapist Chris Wells urging him to push through a pedaling exercise to regain his strength.“That’s going to be tough but I’ll work it out,” Faucette, 58, replied, breathing heavily but giving a smile. The Maryland team last year performed the world’s first transplant of a heart from a genetically alter...

Jaideep Ahlawat: I don’t even care about these tags like OTT actor

For actors doing some exceptional work in the web space, getting labelled as an OTT actor seems to have become the norm now. But, not everyone frets about it or let it come in way of their work. Actor Jaideep Ahlawat, who became a household name and garnered immense praise for his role as Hathiram Chaudhary in web show Pataal Lok (2020), is definitely among this lot. “I just don’t like this word. Whenever someone says ‘OTT actor’, I ask, ‘What’s an OTT actor? Does it mean he can only act when he is working on OTT? Or will he work bad when he’s acting in a film meant for a theatrical release? I think that’s the word people started to use casually when they said so and so actor works a lot of digital platforms,” says the actor, adding , “Yeh OTT abhi aaya hai yaar, bas teen saal pehle [durin...

Biden urges more U.S. military funding for Ukraine, Israel in Oval Office address

WASHINGTON —  President Biden used a rare Oval Office address Thursday to urge Americans to support more military funding for Israel in the wake of a deadly Hamas attack and more aid for Ukraine in its protracted war against Russia, warning that both conflicts pose a threat to U.S. national security.“Our alliances are what keep us safe. And our values are what make us a partner that other nations want to work with,” Biden said in only his second address from behind the Resolute Desk. “We put all of that at risk if we walk away from Ukraine or turn our back on Israel.”Biden said he planned to send an emergency funding request to Congress that would provide more assistance for U.S. allies. The request, which the White House is expected to unveil Friday, totals more than $100 billion. The pro...

Ganapath review: Tiger Shroff’s futuristic action film has very bleak future | Bollywood

Writer-director Vikas Bahl's Ganapath is far from being an entertainer or a film that keeps you engaged. In the name of being futuristic, Ganapath presents a rather silly premise that has no head or tail, just stitches some fight scenes and dance numbers, expecting us to not only believe in it but also love it. Bahl tries to pack in a lot but fails to say anything concrete. With a weak screenplay and a wafer-thin plot, he's all over the place, and so are you after a point.  (Also read: Ganapath trailer: Immortal Tiger Shroff fights for his people in a dystopic CGI-fest with Kriti Sanon, Amitabh Bachchan) Ganapath review: Tiger Shroff plays the lead with Kriti Sanon opposite him. Research Lacking on Plastic’s Health Impact in Global South

This story was produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center’s Ocean Reporting Network. Some 13,000 chemicals are associated with plastic production, of which only 7,000 or so have been investigated for their health and environmental impacts. Nearly half of those studied have elements deemed hazardous to human health, but the research—spanning 50 years, multiple languages, thousands of publications, and an alphabet soup’s worth of acronyms, synonyms, and chemical compounds—is difficult to navigate. Yet doing so has become increasingly important as plastic production ramps up, along with its potential for causing serious threats to human health.A new research map brings order to the chaos, indexing the existing research by chemical compound, health outcomes, affected population groups, an...

Make This Single-serving, Crustless Pumpkin Pie in Your Microwave

Photo: Claire LowerFor whatever reason, I hate-follow a bunch of keto-focused influencer accounts on Instagram. They’ll lure me in with a bunch of meat, then hit me with a bell-pepper-as-bread “sandwich,” a monstrosity I have been familiar with since the Weight Watching days of my very early 20s. They’re also obsessed with microwaveable, crustless “pumpkin pies,” which inevitably contain too many eggs and spoonfuls of sugar-free sweetener. Those desserts taste bad, but this single-serving crustless pumpkin pie tastes good, and you can make it in your microwave. The problem with the keto pies is not the microwave, or the fact that they are crustless, but the insistence on using a whole egg for a single serving, which is far too much egg. That, coupled with alternative sweeteners, gives the d...
