Suspect in Tupac Shakur’s killing won’t face the death penalty

Prosecutors won’t seek the death penalty against the man accused of orchestrating the killing of Tupac Shakur, they told a Las Vegas judge Thursday as Duane “Keffe D” Davis pleaded not guilty to murder.Davis, 60, a self-admitted shot caller of the Compton Southside Crips, appeared in court handcuffed and told the judge he understood the charge he faced. He then entered his plea on his third court appearance since his late September arrest in one of the nation’s most infamous celebrity murder cases. After Clark County Judge Tierra D. Jones asked prosecutors whether they would seek the death penalty against Davis in the 1996 slaying, a prosecutor said they were not planning to ask a review panel to consider such a move.Davis asked the judge to explain what she meant by the question. “Every f...

Jab Imtiaz Ali got emotional on a visit to his alma mater, Hindu College

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s love for his alma mater, Hindu College at Delhi University, is not unknown. But the last time he visited his college campus, it was not just a trip down the nostalgia lane but also one last experience of seeing the hostel rooms where he created major memories from his #CampusKeDin. “There’s a sad and bitter note to this visit,” said Ali, who is a 1993 graduate in BA (Hons) English, as he knows that the Boys’ Hostel is being brought down for a new building to be constructed in its place. Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently visited the old building of boys' hostel at Hindu College. Overwhelmed with emotions, Ali told us, “I am [constantly] seeing the building of the Hindu College Boys' Hostel because it’s getting demolished. I’ll probably never see it again. I’ve ta...

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Kids | TIME

The human heart is a muscle, but it’s also a kind of complicated balloon—a balloon that fills and empties roughly 60 to 100 times every minute, and several billion times during the course of a lifetime. Among people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the walls of the heart muscle are abnormally thick. This thickness can interfere with the heart’s normal filling-and-emptying operation. “If you think of a balloon made with super-thick rubber, you have to blow harder to fill it, and it’s the same with a hypertrophic heart,” says Dr. Daphne Hsu, professor of pediatrics and medicine at Pediatric Heart Center of Montefiore/Einstein in New York. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common form of genetic heart disease in the U.S. and the second commonest heart-muscle disease among children. Rou...

High court leans against trademark in Trump T-shirt case

WASHINGTON —  Supreme Court justices on Wednesday sounded ready to rule that a T-shirt with the phrase “Trump Too Small” cannot be trademarked by a California attorney seeking the exclusive right to sell clothing with the slogan.Trump is not a party to the case of Vidal vs. Elster, but in the past he objected when businesses and others tried to make use of his name.In arguments Wednesday, Biden administration attorneys urged the court to deny the trademark for the disputed shirts, but their position was not related to the message, which is critical of the former president. Since 1946, Congress has barred the registering of a trademark that includes a name or image that identifies “a particular living individual,” administration attorneys said. When they adopted this provision, lawmakers wer...

America’s Infant Mortality Rate Is Increasing

The infant mortality rate in the U.S. is on its way up. New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show a nearly 3% rise in the rate of infant deaths between 2021 and 2022, which is the largest year-over-year increase the agency has recorded since 2002. The total number of infant deaths, as well as the rate at which they occur, has increased at times in the last two decades. Indeed, both rose just a year earlier, from  2020 to 2021. But, says Danielle Ely, the lead author of the CDC’s new report, that reflected a year—2021—when many more babies were being born than in the previous year—2020—which was the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The even larger rise in infant mortality in 2022 “was a bit of a surprise,” she says, given the decades-long downward trend. The 20...
