What it’s like to detox at the Soho Farmhouse of Milan

Thankfully, there isn’t. I found this out on day two, after a lifestyle biomarkers meeting, bio-energetic checkup and medical consultation. This involves a blood test, a conversation about your typical diet and a test to see which of your “energy centres” are experiencing stress. I was dubious of this chakra-esque element, but the Chenot professional did correctly identify my liver and feet as being under stress, which was wholly correct. What was even more interesting, though, was the result of my blood and medical tests: I’m vitamin B and C deficient, which explains all the sickness, as well as under hydrated and oversaturated with salt (I replied to the doctor, “That is because I love salt.”) But, on the plus side, I apparently have the metabolism of a 23-year-old. Huzzah! Source lin...

What to Eat Before and After Your Workout

Through the ages, humans have fueled their most physically demanding efforts with meaty proteins. Ancient Greeks loaded up on red meat before Olympic contests, and medieval knights recovered from war with venison and pork. The tradition continues today, with world-record-setting weightlifters breakfasting on chicken thighs, eggs, and bacon. But experts recommend that the modern, average person eat several other foods before and after tough workouts, even if the knights may have tossed them from their castle windows. The missing ingredientsDuring exercise, blood carries the nutrients we’ve consumed to our strained muscles, where they’re absorbed. “We are what we eat,” says Keith Baar, a molecular exercise physiologist at the University of California, Davis. “And when we exercise, we’re more o...

How summer 2024 became the season of the fashion sock

But with a world of sock styles and colours to choose from, and likely a whole selection ready-made in your own sock drawer, which is the type to pick? “I’ve been seeing girls wearing red socks everywhere,” says Stothert, “and I love those especially because I think they just feel really preppy. It reminds me of really dapper men at fashion week, especially at Pitti Oumo. It feels almost like a reference to funky men’s tailoring. They go with everything — brown shoes, red shoes, white shoes, black shoes, everything.” Source link

Health Experts are Watching a More Dangerous Version of Mpox

Cases of a new group of mpox viruses are rising, potentially posing a risk to people around the world, according to health officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). So far, the cases have been centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and have not spread beyond Central African countries where the virus remains endemic, the CDC wrote in a report on May 16. But health officials are concerned because this group of viruses—known as clade I mpox viruses—is known to cause more severe illness than the clade II viruses responsible for the previous mpox outbreaks in 2022, which originated in Nigeria. Clade I mpox viruses have a higher fatality rate—killing anywhere from 1.4% to more than 10% of infected people—than clade II, which has a 0.1% to 3.6% mortality ...

Ludicrous reason why Amazon dumped Silk: Spider Society despite ordering Nicolas Cage-led Spider-Man Noir | Report | Web Series

Earlier this week, Amazon officially greenlit Noir, its Nicolas Cage-led live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. Produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, this chapter of the expanding Spider-Verse for TV was confirmed just before Amazon's upfront presentation on Tuesday. However, studio's lips remained sealed when it came to discussing the future of another series that had presumably gone into development before Noir - Silk: Spider Society. Silk: Spider Society On May 16, Deadline reported Amazon's silence on the matter was attributed to the studio dumping the storyline despite Silk being in the works for nearly five years. The media outlet's reporter Nellie Andreeva claimed that Amazon's ultimate decision of shelving the series was finali...

The best villas to book in Europe — with sensational pools

Long afternoons flicking through the sun-cracked pages of a novel, poolside; al fresco dinners rustled together from local market jaunts; endless games of cards into the still evening, always to a lazy cicada chorus. There is nothing quite like a Mediterranean summer holiday, when you forget what day it is and while away hours on a sun lounger or on morning ambles for fresh bread. It recalls the delicious boredom of childhood – one technology cruelly wrenched from us – where the crunch of brittle grass underfoot is observed and the eye is afforded time to trace the outline of the hills and soak in the surrounding bucolic oomph. Sleek, otter-like bodies surge from pools and flop onto warm towels, and along the coast, friends nurse gin and tonics with tight, sun-kissed skin as the water in t...

How Private Donors Shape Birth-Control Choices

If you’re an undocumented immigrant in Tennessee, you don’t have a lot of options when it comes to birth control. You can’t get an abortion—it’s been banned with very limited exceptions since 2022. You can’t get services from state public-health clinics, which lost federal funding with the abortion ban. The state has backfilled the funding, but a Tennessee law prohibits that money from being used for family-planning services for people without legal status. One thing you can do is reach out to a nonprofit called A Step Ahead, which will pay for you to get a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC), like an intrauterine device (IUD) or an implant that goes into your arm. But there’s a problem, some reproductive justice advocates say. In many regions of the state, including Memphis and N...
