Nanteos Mansion hotel review: a country house hotel with charm and grandeur

In its earlier incarnation, it hosted the Nanteos Cup brought to the house by monks at the Dissolution of the monasteries, which was, by legend, the Holy Grail. There’s a replica of the original (which is in the National Library of Wales, close by) simple cracked wooden vessel in the hall – so yes, very Indiana Jones. Source link

Folks Hotel, Helsinki: a hotel that gets everything right

But it’s the modern flourishes that stop it feeling like you’re sleeping in a museum — the clever train tracks in neon light that run across the brick exterior, quirky antiques and minimalist work by local artists, such as former ice hockey player Ville Leino. Touches of the original exposed brick are brought up-to-date by a clever use of colour — slate, rich teal, orange, bright yellow. And ,of course, the sauna. The feel is characterful, cosy and authentic, no doubt helped by the hotel — which opened in October 2020 — having independent Finnish owners, rather than pretending to be all those things while being part of a giant international group. The service is friendly, helpful and very welcoming. Source link

Scotland’s only gender clinic for young people has paused prescribing puberty blockers for new patients under 18 years old after the National Health Service (NHS) in England banned children from receiving the gender treatment last month. They can be prescribed to treat gender dysphoria, the clinical term for psychological distress that results from an incongruence between one’s sex assigned at birth and one’s gender identity. The Sandyford Clinic, based in Glasgow, announced that new patients aged 16 and 17 “will no longer be prescribed gender affirming hormone treatment until they are 18 years old,” the clinic wrote in an update on its website. Existing pat...

Why Taylor Swift’s Music Makes Us So Emotional

A suggestion for the masses: Now would be a good time to check in on your favorite Taylor Swift fan. After months of feverish anticipation, the superstar delivered her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, on Friday—and Swifities everywhere are losing their minds. From a neuroscience perspective, the response makes sense. Research suggests that music activates the brain’s reward system, triggering the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. “We know that music is highly tied to emotion for a variety of reasons,” says Lindsay Halladay, an associate professor in neuroscience and psychology at Santa Clara University. “The tempo of music can actually modulate neural oscillations, which are sometimes called brain waves.
