Beyoncé, who has become the most nominated artist in the award show’s history with a total of 99 nominations, took home Album of the Year for her country album, Cowboy Carter.

This is the first time she has won the award and she became the first Black woman to do so in the 21st century. Lauryn Hill last won in 1999 for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, joining Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston.

Not only was the Texas Hold ’Em singer the most nominated artist this year, with a total of 11 nods, but she also has the most Grammy Awards of all time, with a total of 35 wins.

Beyoncé started the night strong by taking home the award for Best Country Duo/Group performance for her collab with Miley Cyrus, II Most Wanted. The win marked her first-ever win in a Country category —making her the first Black woman to win a Grammy for a country music song since the Pointer Sisters win in 1975 for Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Beyoncé also won Best Country Album for Cowboy Carter, making her the first Black female artist to win in the category.

“Wow I really was not expecting this,” Beyoncé said as she accepted her award. “I want to thank God that I’m still able to do what I love after so many years. I’d like to thank all of the incredible country artists that accepted album. We worked so hard on it.”

“First and foremost, praise to the most high we woke up this morning,” Lamar said in his acceptance speech, sending love to Los Angeles. “We gonna dedicate this one to this city: Compton, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, out to the Valley, San Bernardino, all that. This is my neck of the woods that held me down since a young pup, since I was in the studio scrapping to write the best raps and all that to write ones like these.”

Lamar’s hit record was also an early winner, receiving trophies for Best Music Video, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. It marks his seventh time winning in the latter category. Earlier this year, Not Like Us become the first diss track to reach one billion streams on Spotify, according to figures listed on streaming service.

Sabrina Carpenter accepted the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for her album, Short n’ Sweet. She also took home a Grammy prior to the show for Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit song, Espresso.

“I’m still out of breath from the performance, so I really was not expecting this,” she said during her speech for Best Pop Vocal Album. “And all those nominees that were just on the screen are some of my favourite artists in the world, and I can’t believe I’m nominated against them, or even in this room right now. This is whoa — my first Grammy, so I’m gonna cry.”

Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars made their acceptance speeches to each other as they accepted Best Group/Duo Performance for their duet, Die With a Smile.

“I’m so honoured to have a small part in your giant musical legacy and I really truly believe that God gave us this song to sing together,” Mars told Gaga.

Gaga went just as big with her kudos, saying, “Bruno you are an incredible human being, you’re a musician for the ages.”

“I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off of artists would offer a livable wage, and health care especially, to developing artists,” she said, reading from what looked like a diary, to loud cheers.

She talked about being dropped from her initial label deal when she was a minor and being left without job experience and health insurance. “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” she said.
